Come this March, Rita Boehland will be basking in the sunshine in a tropical paradise thanks to KWAD/KNSP radio’s “Hear Today, Gone to Maui” contest.
Boehland, who resides in rural Verndale and was formerly from Bertha, has done very little traveling, so she is extremely excited about her upcoming trip.
When the winner was announced on the radio, she was on her way to work at Leaf River Ag in Wadena. She heard the announcer say “Rita” and she thought, “Ah, it must be that other Rita that wins a lot”. But, it wasn’t, it was her!
“I was shaking so bad,” admitted Boehland after hearing her name.
“They shocked me, that’s for sure.”
She said that she had qualified for the trip many times, but “never, never” expected to win.
She will be traveling with her boyfriend, Don Zerfoss, to Maui in March, after giving first dibs to her daughters who were unable to go along with her.
To be qualified, winners typically have ten minutes to call in, but Boehland said that the final winner isn’t on a time limit. So she had some time to arrive at work, get congratulated loudly by her coworkers and get over the initial shock before calling in to claim her prize.
“I can’t wait now; it’s still unreal,” said
Boehland who is looking forward to the beauty of the island and the warm temperatures that she will experience while there.
