Note: In the January 4 issue in the story, “It’s not Mayberry anymore,” readers may have noted the population figures that were used in the story were actually from the 2000 census, not the 2010 census. The following story has the 2010 census figures.
In spite of what the popular song may imply about it “being a small world,” the world is a mighty big place and according to the 2010 census, it just keeps getting bigger.
As of January 4, 2012, the total population in the United States was an estimated 312,800,014. I noted as I looked at the number later that day that the number had risen and appears to do so every hour or less throughout the day. While that in itself would be a fascinating study, let’s limit ourselves to looking at Minnesota, and more specifically, to the cities located in Todd County.
Minnesota’s population total from the 2010 census is 5,303,925. This is up 7.8% from the 2000 census. Narrowing that down even further, Todd County has a population of 24,895 in 2010, up from 24,426 in 2000.
By city in the county, Long Prairie actually is the largest city in the county now with 3458. Staples, which had previously been the largest city, took a dip to 2981 on the 2010 census report.
Following is the population by city for 2000 and 2010:

City 2000 2010
Bertha 470 497
Browerville 735 790
Burtrum 146 144
Clarissa 609 681
Eagle Bend 595 535
Grey Eagle 335 348
Hewitt 269 266
Long Prairie 3040 3458
Osakis 1600 1740
Staples 3104 2981
West Union 83 111
