Glenn Johnson

Memorial services for Glenn Comyn Johnson, 97, will be held on Saturday, February 18 at 11 a.m. at Faith United Church of Christ in Bertha, with Reverend Marli Danielson officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services at the church on Saturday. Glenn passed away on Sunday, January 29, 2012 at the Golden Living Center in Slayton.
Glenn Johnson was born on January 1, 1915 in Nelson, to Nels and Minnie Peterson Johnson. He grew up in Nelson until 1926 when the family moved to St. Paul. In 1932, the family moved to Alexandria, and Glenn graduated from Alexandria High School in 1933. Glenn then attended Macalester College in St Paul, graduating in 1938. Glenn then moved to Newfolden for two years.
On June 28, 1940 he and Evelyn Ovidia Johnson were married in Erskine. Following their marriage they made their home in Morristown, where Glenn served as principal for two years. They then moved to Akeley, and Glenn again served as principal and also received his Masters Degree at the University of North Dakota in 1950. In 1951 they moved to Claremont, where Glenn served as superintendent. In 1955, they moved to Bertha, and Glenn again served as superintendent for many years.
Evelyn passed away on September 27, 1973. Glenn retired in 1977 and remained in Bertha until 2003 when he moved to Sunrise Terrace in Slayton. In 2005, Glenn became a resident of the Golden Living Center-Slayton.
He was a member of Faith United Church of Christ in Bertha. He also was active in the Masonic Fraternity in Bertha and Wadena, Zurah Shrine Temple in Minneapolis, the Birak Shrine Club in Fergus Falls, Bertha Lions Club and Bertha Commercial Club.
Glenn served as High School League District Secretary and Coordinator for several years. Glenn also refereed high school football and basketball games. Glenn enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling, watching baseball and family vacations at Isle O’Dreams near Park Rapids.
Glenn was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Evelyn; infant son, Steven Johnson; six siblings, Elving, Arther, Ruth, Nels (Ed), Floyd (Melvin) and Hollis Johnson.
He is survived by his two sons and their spouses, David (Linda) Johnson of Lake Wilson and Richard (Kapricia) Johnson of Leland, North Carolina; four grandchildren, Eric Johnson and Janeen Satone, Kate and Mike Wolford, Ben and Cameron Johnson; and one great-grandson, Brody Wolford.
Interment will be at Zion Cemetery in Bertha.
